Doom and Gloom and Happiness!
Jackie, France – “My 10 year old daughter looked surprised that you should need a reason to be cheerful! She said life just makes her cheerful. Being happy makes other people happy so what more reason do you need?”
Did you hear it? The Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2 last Friday gave some time the many reasons we can be cheerful in these supposed ‘gloomy times’. Finally!! This is exactly what we’ve been feeling and discussing at Socks for Happy People.
Some people lambasted the media for it’s “over the top” reporting, and felt we were actually talking ourselves into a recession. Others wanted to focus on all the things that they can be happy about that possible recession won’t affect.
All in all it was a lovely break from the doom and gloom that seems to have dominated the headlines and we loved people’s balanced perspectives. Clearly, it could be a difficult time for some people, but ultimately we all probably have a great deal to be happy about.
We’d like to collect your reasons to be cheerful at the moment, as we could all do with hearing an alternative viewpoint! Simply click the comments button below to leave your thoughts.
As a bit of inspiration, here are some of the Radio 2 listeners thoughts…
Michael, West Yorkshire – “It’s the perfect time to count your blessings and look for the good things in life. We don’t have a drought or anything. We should be grateful for what we do have at this time.”
Phylis, Lincolnshire – “We’ve all got plenty, everyone’s got food and as I looked out of my window this morning there were autumn leaves more beautiful than I’ve ever seen this year.”
Liz, Wallacy – “A news report last week showed a mother in Ethiopia feeding her five children mud pies as she had no food for them. We wouldn’t ever have to do that. Do we realise how lucky we are?”
Nigel, County Durham – “Things are slowing down a little, but they haven’t stopped! The vast majority of people are still going to work. But more importantly than that, it’s perhaps making people realise that there’s a lot more to life than money and you don’t have to spend money to have fun or enjoy yourself.”
Go on, add your reasons to be cheerful…

Here’s some more comments from the Radio 2 listeners…
Antoinette, North Devon – “Here in North Devon, even though it’s supposedly the 2nd poorest area to live in England, we’re still feeling lucky. We’ve all got our health and there’s so much to be grateful for really. I think with all the affluence, it maybe skewered our values and now it’s time to return to what’s really important.”
Phylis, Lincolnshire – ” I’m tired of people moaning about money, there’s so much out in the world to see and appreciate, people just need to get, and enjoy it and appreciate what we have, in the UK especially”
Darrel, York – “This is an evolutionary process. The recession can provide a moment for all of us to take stock and figure out what it is we are doing with our lives”.

I’m super excited and happy about playing my drums again for the first time in over a year. I feel consumed by it and look forward to progressing. There is great pleasure to be had by playing a musical instrument. You don’t need a lot of money to do this, in fact you don’t need money at all. It’s true what they say, the best things in life are free.
